How do you use positive affirmations when feeling down?

“I’m not feeling great. What are some ways I can use positive affirmations when feeling down?”

We all have those days when we don’t feel like ourselves and don’t have the energy to “fake it.”

We look outside with trepidation rather than anticipation, and our daily routine or tasks seem way too much. So what do you do when the world doesn’t stop just because you feel down?

While we cannot control our outside world, we can learn how choosing our thoughts can significantly impact our mood. Positive affirmations can help you get out of bed and see the world differently.

Which positive affirmations are best to use when you are feeling down?

While this is personal to what you are going through, I will give you some of my favourites to help you decide which resonates with you. I’ll also outline a two-step process to use when saying positive affirmations. It is important to acknowledge how you are feeling and remind yourself that you aren’t your feelings.

Being conscious of your feelings before you say your affirmations has two significant benefits. First, it makes you feel seen and heard. Second, it creates space for you to view your feelings as an observer. By being curious, you can feel the shift, which is an opportunity to feel empowered rather than like a victim.

You will see what I mean in my examples below.

Acknowledge: I am having a hard time, and I have been here before.

Positive Affirmation: I know each day gets a little better. You’ve got this.

Acknowledge: I am feeling sad, and I am grateful I can recognize this sadness.

Positive Affirmation: I choose to acknowledge it and know it will pass. I am strong.

Acknowledge: I am feeling down.

Positive Affirmation: I appreciate I am feeling down, and I know I am more than my feelings. I want to remind myself my life is important and I have the power to change my life.

Acknowledge: I am feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.

Positive Affirmation: It is okay to be tired and get overwhelmed; it is normal, and it will get easier. Remember, in nature, the seasons will change. The cycles of your life are the same. You’ve got this.

Acknowledge: I am feeling hopeless.

Positive Affirmation: I am grateful I can acknowledge my feelings. I want to remind myself that I am resilient and that I will make it through this.

You will know the positive affirmations that will be the most helpful by listening to how your body and mind react when you say them.

Use this two-step process each day in the morning and the evening.

Start with just one positive Affirmation that really feels the most impactful.

I choose to acknowledge it and know it will pass. I am strong.

Does it work?

It absolutely works. When you are intentional, consistent, and committed to improving, you will find these affirmations work. You need to consider yourself your best friend and start counseling your inner soul.

What would you say to a good friend who was feeling down?

So much suffering is because we feel alone. But I want you to be your biggest supporter. Remember that the number one thing we need to be fulfilled is to feel seen and heard; you can do this for yourself.

When does it not work?

Positive affirmations won’t work when you subconsciously or consciously decide it won’t work and when you don’t listen to your body and needs. Much like a good friend needs to be listened to, so does your heart.
