Nobody can hand over a treasure map perfectly tailored to your dreams and goals.
And there’s no one right path for everyone. However, if you allow yourself to be practical and follow your dreams, you’ll find your way.
In this post, I’ll answer some common questions about building wealth by doing what you love and the steps you can take to make this a reality.
Can you become rich doing what you love?
The first thing to understand is we all view being rich differently.
While some view “being rich” as a specific dollar amount, others see it as being surrounded by people they love. So first, you must understand what being rich means to you and create a goal. Next, it is equally important to clarify what you love. For example, I have a friend who loves skiing and decided to become a ski instructor. Unfortunately, he was miserable teaching people who weren’t patient and he was stuck on the bunny hill.
Afterwards, he said, “I didn’t realize the question should have been: Do you love teaching?”
Should you follow your passion or be practical?
One of the most challenging decisions is whether to pursue your passion or take the practical route.
The answer is you should do both. Being practical helps you build a foundation to have enough money to cover your expenses. You then can dedicate your spare time to working on your passion. In the beginning, you may only be able to dedicate five hours a week to your passion project and 40 hours to practical work. But this is okay because it will change over time as you prosper.
Is there a step-by-step way to become rich while doing what you love?
Step 1: Determine What Rich Means to You
You must determine what being rich means to you. When you know what rich means, you’ll have a goalpost to move towards.
Step 2: Brainstorm and Research
Brainstorm what you would love to do every day of your life. Then, determine how to use this passion to help others and create something unique.
Step 3: Create a Business Plan and Start Small
Create a business plan, start small, and continue to analyze the demand for what you want to bring to market. Be creative in thinking of alternative solutions and how to fulfil this need.
- How much are people willing to pay?
- How will you deliver?
- How will you market?
Dedicate your time and money, but be strategic and outsource tasks that drain you. This way, you can focus on mastering the most essential parts of your creation.
Step 4: Control Your Inner Thoughts and Beliefs
Understand that it takes patience, commitment, and unwavering determination. You need to be ready for others to say, “You can’t do it, or why don’t you get a regular job?”
You must challenge these thoughts head-on and create a positive attitude and mindset where you believe in yourself.
Step 5: Take Action Now
Don’t wait until the perfect time comes because it will never be perfect. Life doesn’t work that way. So, if you are working 9-5 to pay the bills, don’t quit. Just use your spare time wisely and set a weekly amount of hours that you can dedicate to your passion project.
But how can I be rich doing this?
So, now it’s time for the moment of truth. How do you get rich doing this?
Your business/service needs to:
- Offer something better than what is currently available
- Fulfill a current market need
- Be at the right price and in the right market
- Be able to be found
You need to be willing to:
- Take calculated risks
- Dedicate the time necessary to grow your business
- Work on any negative beliefs that hold you back
- Pivot and accept challenges and change
Final Thoughts
Just doing what you love doesn’t make you rich, yet it is possible to get rich by doing what you love.
You are unique and can create a business that generates income by offering something that adds more value than currently available.
You can create this business around the skills and interests that you are passionate about and love to do. And you can build a team to help you run the business and take away the tasks you don’t love.
However, while many people fulfill their passions by starting a business, for others, pursuing a career in something they love may be a better choice.
Not everyone wants to run a business.
The important thing to remember is that we all learn by doing. You can go down one path, discover that you don’t love it, and then take a new path. And you can keep tweaking things until you find that sweet spot of doing what you love and getting paid wonderfully.
As you keep taking action and focusing on your goal, you’ll discover what works for you. Learning what you don’t want will help you understand what you want.
